Do skimpy outfits make men objectify women?

Often times when a man sees a woman in revealing clothing his mind jumps to sex and he shifts his focus from her mind to her body. Some may say this is a sweeping generalization, and others may say DUH. But the latest scientific studies have found that men perceive women as objects when they wear skimpy outfits. Scientific American has summarized these findings at the results are kind of depressing. One Princeton study showed men a series of basic head shots and some pictures of “sexualized women” When viewing the latter there was less activity in the part of the brain responsible for mental state attribution. So basically they viewed those sexy ladies to be less intelligent, ambitious, and friendly. Hmph. Can’t you be smoking hot AND smart?! We’d like to think so!

Another similar study by Kurt Gray and colleagues in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found that guys perceive sexy female in images as a hyper experienced lady capable of feeling but not thinking. When presented with an image of a clothed woman or a woman’s face the men surveyed viewed her as competent and logical, but photos of bodies with less clothing were vulnerable and less thoughtful.

While these findings may be true for some men, we hope this study only speaks to a certain percentage of the opposite gender. Either that or men have been watching too much crappy porn and have come to associate sexy, naked ladies as having no brains. That said, it does make us reconsider what we’d wear to an interview, first date, or important occasion when we’d like to be taken seriously.
