Hosea Chanchez is known by many as the actor that plays football player Malik Wright on the BET show “The Game.”

His character is a star athlete who has had his share of personal problems but is on the road to recovery. “The Game” will be premiering its fifth season on January 10th, and in an interview with The Huffington Post’s BlackVoices, Chanchez shows that he is more than just the character he plays. He touched on topics such as his foundation Watch Me Win, the sometimes 20-hour days it requires to work on “The Game” and the Occupy Wall Street Movement.

Chanchez describes Watch Me Win as a youth empowerment organization for 14-24-year-olds where they are taught “how to overcome socioeconomic and mental roadblocks, how to live a fear-free life and how to tap into their full potential.” The organization also provides them with online mentoring and weekly home visits.

Some may be surprised to hear that the Alabama native prefers basketball over football. However, during the recent NBA lockout his attention was focused on the Occupy Wall Street Movement.

“I’m more concerned with the Occupy that’s going on…the people that when they lose their jobs, they’re losing their homes, they’re losing their food,” he said.

That same outlook is what Chanchez uses to get him through the strenuous 20-hour workdays he sometimes puts in on the set of “The Game.”

“When I’m tired at work, I realize the crew has to eat…there’s tons of jobs associated with just my job. So no matter what you do in life, it always comes back to having passion, having purpose and doing something you love.”

The long hours also pay off for the fans who remain huge supporters of the show, but did criticize that the show changed once it moved to BET.

“The show changed in general, which is really natural after four seasons of a show,” he said. “The producers just wanted to try to give the fans what they wanted. This season the direction of the show is going to change completely again and get back to a lot more of the things that the fans said they wanted from the earlier years of ‘The Game.’”
