Designer Uses Fashion to Inspire Women and Girls

Daphne Valerius is the creative visionary behind i.am.her Apparel which is a collection of fashion tops that set out to inspire women and girls of color in a tangible way. 

Valerius was inspired by her love for hip-hop and her film, The Souls of Black Girls. She is a native ofRhode Island by way ofBrooklyn,N.Y. and is pursuing her passion of redefining the way media images are transmitted to women and girls. She began her journey as an undergraduate student atSt. John’sUniversity as a Ronald McNair scholar and completed her Master’s degree in broadcast journalism at Emerson College.

Her documentary, The Souls of Black Girls, won the Associated Press Award for Public Affairs and the film also received support from the late Dr. Dorothy Height. At the Harlem International Film Festival, Valerius was awarded the Mira Nair Award for Rising Filmmaker and was named among the Best Black Documentary Directors of 2008. She was featured as a panelist of Proctor & Gamble’s “My Black is Beautiful” Tour and was invited to the White House as a guest of First Lady Michelle Obama.

Valerius is committed to her craft of influencing, inspiring and uplifting women of color through positive and educational mediums including television and film projects. As the founder and CEO of i.am.her Collective, LLC, Valerius has assembled a team of highly talented and experienced individuals, each hand-selected to take i.am.her Apparel to the next level.
