FEARLESS BLACK WOMAN IN HISTORY: MARIAN ANDERSON
MARIAN ANDERSON (1902-1993)
Well-known African American, opera singer (contralto), Marian Anderson is a FEARLESS woman to get to know. Her career was shadowed by racial prejudice, including the infamous incident in 1937 when the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) refused to let her sing at Constitution Hall to an intergrated audience. With the help of President Roosevelt’s wife, First Lady Eleanor, she was granted the opportunity to sing on the steps of Lincoln Memorial for an audience of more than 75,00 people. Her achievements include being the first black person to sing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Also, she has honors that range from a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award to the President’s Medal of Freedom
